Puccini’s opera La bohème tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists in 1930s Paris whose carefree lives and passionate love affairs—especially between the penniless poet Rodolfo and the ailing seamstress Mimì—are overshadowed by extreme poverty and devastating illness.
The beginning of Act II is set in a bustling Christmas Eve market in the Latin Quarter of Paris, outside the famous Café Momus. In this joyful scene, Rodolfo and Mimi join the vibrant holiday crowds amidst vendors shouting out their wares and children clamouring to see what Parpignol, the toy seller, has to offer.
Puccini’s music perfectly captures the lively, excited energy of a busy Christmas market scene, filled with shoppers doing their last-minute festive shopping. It is a light-hearted, carefree high point in the opera that is purposefully designed to contrast with the chilling tragedy to come.
