Description
Mariä Wiegenlied (The Virgin’s Slumber Song) was included in a collection of songs for voice and piano entitled Schlichte Weisen Op.76 (1904) by the German composer, Max Reger (1873-1916). Volume Six of the collection comprises his Neun Kinderlieder (Nine Songs for Children) which opens with Mariä Wiegenlied. In 1915 arrangements by Reger of a number of the songs, including Mariä Wiegenlied, were published for voice and orchestra.
The song’s melody originated as Resonet in Laudibus (Let Our Praises Resound) – a 14th century German carol. The melody is also known as Joseph Dearest, Joseph Mild and as Christ was Born on Christmas Day.
Mariä Wiegenlied is essentially a Christmas lullaby in which the Virgin Mary sings to her baby, Jesus, while he sleeps. The lilting rhythm and gentle melody suggest the rocking of a cradle.
