Description
I Vow To Thee My Country is a hymn tune setting by the British composer Gustav Holst of a pre-WW1 poem by Sir Cecil Spring Rice. In the early 1920s when Holst was asked to set the words to music he was so over-worked and tired that he was, recalled his daughter Imogen, relieved to discover that he could rework the stately theme from the middle section of the Jupiter movement of his orchestral suite The Planets – which conveniently fitted the lyrics.
Also known as the hymn tune Thaxted, it is widely used in Remembrance Day services and weddings and funerals alike. Rugby fans will also know it as ‘The World in Union’.
