Description

For a number of years Erik Satie (1866-1925) lived in the Paris suburb of Montmartre where he scraped a living working as a pianist in the cabaret bars ‘Le Chat Noir’ and ‘Le Lapin Agile’.  Alongside his despised cabaret work Satie worked on several serious theatre pieces, few of which ever saw the light of day – and perhaps why so many unfinished fragments were discovered after his death.

Gambades is a piano piece from Carnet d’esquisses et de croquis (Notebook of Sketches and Rough Drafts) – essentially a posthumous collection of previously unpublished fragments and unfinished manuscripts.  Gambades is the second piece presented under the subtitle Esquisses & Sketch Montmartrois. Gambades was probably written around 1900 – after the publication of his now-world-famous Gymnopédies, but before they had received much attention (or made him any money).

A gambade is lively or playful skipping, leaping or dancing movement.
