Yes Sir, That’s My Baby is a popular US standard written in 1925 by Walter Donaldson (composer) and Gus Kahn (lyricist). The song was inspired by a pig – although not a real one! One afternoon, during a visit to their friend, stage entertainer Eddie Cantor, Donaldson and Kahn were intrigued by a mechanical pig Cantor’s daughter was playing with. Once wound up the pig walked around in rhythm whilst playing two notes. Drawing inspiration from this Kahn started working on lyrics to fit the pig’s two notes and soon came up with the song’s title and opening line of the chorus. The pair quickly turned it into a song and it soon became – and remains – hugely popular. Such was its commercial success that Kahn was said to have commented that the money he made from the song constituted the largest amount a Jewish songwriter had ever made from a pig.
