Description

Howard Goodall (1958-) is an EMMY, BRIT and BAFTA award-winning composer of choral music, stage musicals, film and TV scores.  His music for TV shows includes Red Dwarf, Blackadder, Mr. Bean and QI but is perhaps best known for his setting of Psalm 23 The Lord is my Shepherd.  This heart-warming, gentle and instantly recognisable song was used as the theme tune to BBC TV’s award-winning comedy The Vicar of Dibley, starring Dawn French.

In writing The Lord is my Shepherd  Howard’s intention was to create a piece of music that would have a life of its own beyond the series.  He certainly succeeded: it is now an extremely popular, much loved and regularly performed work.  Clearly the piece has choral origins but it is equally lovely in this arrangement for wind quintet which I hope is a welcome addition to the light-hearted repertoire, appropriate for a variety of occasions – not least weddings and funerals.
