Description
España cañí (Spanish Gypsy Dance) is a famous instrumental piece by the Spanish composer Pascual Marquina Narro (1873–1948). It was written around 1923 and first recorded in 1926.
Its opening, with its characteristic arpeggios, is arguably the best-known snippet of Spanish music and it sets the scene perfectly for the ensuing dramatic, fiery rhythms and flowing melodies. It is very commonly used in dance competitions for the Latin Paso Doble (two-step) dance – a dance which, since the 19th century, has been associated with bullfighting.
It has been transcribed countless times over the years and is here arranged for wind quintet.
