Description
John Philip Sousa (1854-1932) was an American composer and conductor of the late Romantic period known primarily for his extremely catchy U.S. military marches. His best-known works are The Stars and Stripes Forever, Semper Fidelis, The Liberty Bell, The Thunderer, and The Washington Post.
Aside from marches Sousa could turn his hand to a variety of styles, and The Gliding Girl is a perfect example. Written in 1912 – a fair time after his more famous output – The Gliding Girl is, of all things, a tango. A tango – by Sousa – who knew?! With a relaxed tempo and slinky charm, it is simply irresistible.
