I am delighted to present a double-bill of Britten. A little while ago I published an arrangement of Britten's delightful 'Soirées Musicales' and now I bring you the companion piece, his 'Matinées Musicales'. Until the end of the month use the SPECIAL OFFER code 'britten-15' for 15% off these pieces. bit.ly/3FETXM4Both suites were written when Britten was in his 20s but his emerging style is very much evident - and his tongue-in-cheek' nod to themes by Rossini are masterful and witty. These suites are both arranged for wind quintet and are really fun to play. ... See MoreSee Less

I have been privileged to have worked, once again, with my former teacher, Graham Sheen, on publishing a number of his wonderful arrangements and original works for wind quintet, bassoon quartet and bassoon choir. portuspress.com/product-tag/graham-sheen/For wind quintet there are arrangements of: Amy Beach's gorgeous 'Prelude on an Old Folk Tune'; a fun 'Scherzo' by Horatio Parker; and a wonderfully modern take on the Christmas carol 'I Saw Three Ships'. And original works: the dazzling 'Variations on a Theme of Shostakovich'; and the delightfully quirky 'Tower Hill (after Giles Farnaby)'.For bassoon quartet there's another version of Graham's 'Variations on a Theme of Shostakovich'. There is also a bassoon quartet arrangement of Satie's lovely 'Je te veux' and for bassoon choir Lotti's 'Crucifixus' and Rameau's 'Contredanse en Rondeau', And there's more in the pipeline - for clarinet and bass clarinet ensembles ... ... Being a wind player I have to admit that my string quartet knowledge is limited, but when I stumbled across Puccini's 'Crisantemi' (Chrysanthemums) I knew straightaway I had to arrange it. A little treat for you bassoonists ... Godfrey's Lucy Long variations for wind quintet featuring (of course) solo bassoon! It's amazing what you can find out when you starting digging. The theme to this piece has fascinating, but distinctly unsavoury, origins in blackface minstrelsy. However, it is (and has been since in was played at the Proms for many, many years) very catchy and a great way of featuring in the bassoon in a performance (whenever they're allowed again)! portuspress.com/shop/wind-quintet/godfrey-lucy-long/ ... This has been fun! Satie's ballet 'Parade' was a remarkable and ground breaking collaboration between several of the early 20th century's leading artistic minds - not least Pablo Picasso and Jean Cocteau. At its Paris premiere in 1917 its pioneering modernism and sheer outlandishness caused almost as much furore as Stravinsky's 'The Rite of Spring' had done just a few years earlier! 'Mrs Winslow's Soothing Syrup' sounds like something you might need for, erm, a cough ... but this is the subtitle of a piece by Elgar called 'Adagio Cantabile'. The syrup was a concoction given to soothe teething pains in children (although it contained alarmingly high levels of alcohol and morphine)! Elgar wrote the piece for him and his chums to play in the shed behind his father's music shop. Originally for two flutes, an oboe, clarinet and bassoon (played by Elgar himself), I've rearranged it for a standard wind quintet (portuspress.com/shop/wind-quintet/elgar-adagio-cantabile/). There's more 'Shed music' too in the form of his 'Andante con Variazione' - a.k.a. 'Evesham Andante' (portuspress.com/shop/wind-quintet/elgar-andante-con-variazione/). A couple of weeks back, on a day when I had an awful lot on my mind, I knew all would be well when the second movement of Ravel's Piano Concerto in G started playing on the radio.
