Description
Ding Dong! Merrily on High originated as a 16th century secular French dance tune and was published in a dance manual by a priest under the pseudonym Thoinot Arbeau.
It became known as a Christmas carol in the early 20th century when Irish composer Charles Wood (1866-1926) created an arrangement of the melody in a four-part choral harmonization, with words by George Ratcliffe Woodward (1848–1934). It remains one of the best-known Christmas carols.
