Elgar: Mina

Mina is Elgar’s last orchestral piece. An endearing musical portrait of his beloved cairn terrier. Utterly enchanting arrangement for wind quintet.

Elgar’s last orchestral piece is an endearing musical portrait of his beloved cairn terrier, Mina.  Elgar evidently doted on his dogs – and, rather eccentrically, he used to dress Mina up in goggles, a veil and pearls whilst out driving because he thought it made her look like a Duchess!  Lady Elgar most certainly did not approve!

Elgar was able to listen to a recording of Mina just days before he died, with his beloved Mina by his side.  It is a beautiful and utterly enchanting miniature that deserves to be much better known.
