Description

Yesterday was released by the Beatles on their 1965 album, Help!  It features a string quartet backing to McCartney’s vocals and acoustic guitar – no other Beatles appear on the track. The song is a melancholic ballad in which the singer laments for yesterday, when he and his love were together, before she left because of something he said.

It was so radically different from anything the band had released before the Beatles initially decided against issuing it as a single.  When, in 1976, it was finally issued it reached no. 8 in the UK charts.  Since then it has become one of the most popular (and covered) songs in popular music history.
