Description
Czardas was written in 1904 by the Italian composer and violinist Vittorio Monti (1868-1922). Monti drew inspiration from the Csárdás – a Hungarian folk dance tune originating from popular music performed in country taverns, also known as csárdás.
Czardas is, by far, Monti’s best known work. This virtuosic showpiece begins with perhaps one of the most iconic and instantly recognisable musical openings, followed by several defined sections and numerous tempo changes – ending at breakneck speed!
It was originally composed for violin, mandolin, or piano but the piece has been rearranged extensively for a wide range of instruments. Here, Czardas has been arranged for wind quintet, with the clarinet taking the majority of the solo sections. Great as an encore, or showcasing the clarinet!
