Description

Percy Whitlock (1903-46) was primarily known for his organ and choral music, but he also added significantly to the repertoire of English light music.

It was whilst he held the position of organist at the Municipal Pavilion in the seaside resort of Bournemouth that he wrote the Holiday Suite (1938-39).  The suite has three movements: Waltz (In the Ballroom); Spade and Bucket Polka; and Civic March.  Here the Spade and Bucket Polka (renamed Bucket and Spade Polka, following the more usual syntax) has been arranged for wind quintet.  It is a cheery, easy-going and lively little number which perfectly captures carefree seaside days.
